Overview
This Weapon Training Course has been developed to ensure that security personnel who are required to carry firearms during the course of their duties are appropriately trained. The two-day training program incorporates the Australian one-day firearms training course while placing a stronger emphasis on firearm handling skills. The course has been designed in accordance with Australian training standards, and during its development, the following Australian Units of Competency were reviewed:
- CSCSAS404A – Use firearms
- NAT11029001 – Demonstrate knowledge of weapons legislation, weapons, and community safety
- NAT11029002 – Use Category A & B firearms lawfully, safely, and responsibly
- NAT11029003 – Use Category C firearms lawfully, safely, and responsibly
- NAT11029005 – Use Category H firearms lawfully, safely, and responsibly
The live firing range shoot, which serves as the final competency assessment, is independently supervised and endorsed by the PNG Police Special Services Division (PNG SSD).
Units
To achieve a qualification and award of the PDTI Firearms Training Course, participants must demonstrate competency in the following units of competency:
PDTIST4-001 – Demonstrate knowledge of firearm safety legislation and handle the firearm safely
- Demonstrate an understanding of PNG firearms legislation and recite the firearms safety rules
- Handle the firearm safely
PDTIST4-002 – Use the firearm safely and responsibly
- Assess the need to use firearms
- Discharge the firearm
- Evaluate the response
Cost
The cost of this course is based on a per participant basis, however, prices per individual can be negotiated on group bookings. The minimum number of course attendees per course is 6 people and the maximum number per course is set at 10 people.
Note the cost of this course includes ammunition and use of the firing range.
Delivery
The Firearms Training course is instructor lead taking place in a face-to-face setting, over a two day period. Learners will undergo both theory and practical training sessions and will be required to consistency demonstrate safe firearm handling through the course of training.
Each participant will be required to be assessed as competent in a series of firearm handing TOET assessments, prior to being permitted to take part in the live firing range practice assessment.
